The True Authorship of “The Rag-Picker; Or, Bound and Free” Stephen Sakellarios
I demonstrate that George Pickering Burnham, who has been officially credited with authorship of “The Rag-Picker; Or, Bound and Free,” is extremely unlikely to have been its author; and that the real anonymous author had been Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier. See also “A Follow-Up on ‘The True Authorship of ‘The Rag-Picker; Or, Bound and Free’—the Smoking Gun,” concerning the subsequent discovery of additional evidence.
